C3 Civics:

Civic and Political Institutions

Participation and Deliberation: Applying Civic Virtues and Democratic Principles

Processes, Rules, and Laws

Suggested starter questions:

What communities do you belong to?

What responsibilities or duties should citizens have?

Why do we have rules/laws?

Pick one or two rules or laws that you think are unfair.

What services and protections does our local government provide?

What do the city officers and departments do?

Suggested Activity:

Students - Choose a local law that you feel should be changed.  Research the reasons why we have the law (be sure to see both sides of the issue,) the process required to get changes made, and to whom you should speak.

Teacher - Invite city councilors into the classroom to hear students pitch their ideas for new or changed laws. (We had 2 councilors come in last year.  They enjoyed the activity so much that they have both asked when they can come back.)
